Brazil, In Its Own Words

Jair Bolsonaro has been defeated. Lula, the former president, will be the next leader of Brazil. How to make sense of this stunning political comeback for Lula and the deeply uncertain moment into which the country has been plunged, with Bolsonaro, the incumbent, unlikely to accept his defeat?

We present here a selection of films by Brazilians. Let's call it Brazil in its own words. At the centre of this program is Alvorada Palace (2020), an intimate and poignant portrait of the last days in power of Bolsonaro's predecessor and Lula's anointed successor, Dilma Rousseff, whose controversial 2016 impeachment paved the way to Bolsonarismo.
