History; the past and present one, the collective and personal one; creates the framework interconnecting several of the presented documentaries. An evaluation of the political events of the recent months is provided in PROPAGANDA, a film awarded by the jury of Visions du Réel festival, looking back at the presidential campaign which engulfed the country in 2013. Over ten Chilean directors explore the meaning of politics in contemporary Chilean society and the notion of an ideal voter on the Chilean political scene. The history of the country is also discussed in EL EDIFICIO DE LOS CHILENOS, revealing the untraditional story of the abandoned children of exiles who decided to return to their native country in the late 1970s and fight the dictatorial regime.
A journey towards the revelation of a personal family tragedy is the theme of the documentary road movie HIJA, with a mother and daughter setting out on a common journey to find out that the boundary between truth and lies is dangerously thin. The life story of an ageing circus comedian is followed in EL GRAN CIRCO POBRE DE TIMOTEO which lets the viewers experience the bitterness of the personal struggle with admitting to oneself that one is losing physical strength. Such a struggle is also daily faced by the residents of a nursing home, the protagonists of the ZagrebDOX winner LA ÚLTIMA ESTACIÓN.
The eight selected documentaries further include the three films EL SALVAVIDAS, LAS MUJERES DEL PASAJERO and NAOMI CAMPBEL; a documentary which attracted attention in 2013 during the Doc Alliance CPH:DOX festival, as the film with a protagonist undergoing gender transformation on the backdrop of a reality show met with a positive response both on the part of viewers and film critics.
