Cities and Places

In the third week of the student film summer, you can draw a red circle around the western tip of Europe. Our steps directed towards the film schools around the world and the films made by their students will lead to Portugal this time. How do the students of the renowned Escola Superior de Artes e Design de Caldas da Rainha see the cities and places of their lives? You can watch the results of the film assignment on the theme of “City Places” from July 20 to August 2 at DAFilms.com for free!

Have you always wanted to know what film studies are like? Have you studied the subject yourselves and are you looking for a comparison? Use the unique opportunity to sit at a virtual desk of the film department of the Upper School of Art and Design in the Portuguese city of Caldas da Rainha. Besides numerous ceramic pottery workshops with a long tradition, the medium-sized city situated in Central Portugal near the shore of the Atlantic Ocean is also home to a large university campus dedicated to art studies. Future filmmakers are preparing for their artistic careers there along with visual artists, designers and theatre professionals.

Those charmed by the film medium can attend the school’s “Sound and Image” programme offering studies in the field of film and television, new media, film technology, editing, production and script editing. The complex preparation of young talents includes demanding and original tasks. You can have a look at one such assignment on the theme of “City Places”. How attentive are we to the city we set out to each day to struggle with our everyday tasks? How colourful is our perception of the grey halls we walk through several times a day? How many stories are related to a single place, for example the room we wake up in every morning?

The selection of several short films made by third-year students from Caldas da Rainha proves that the local filmmakers definitely do not lack attentiveness, imagination and sensitivity. The individual stories as well as the silent observation of details and the experimental tone of the films show a wide range of creative approaches. The experimental approach is employed by the twenty-minute film SO MANY EYES IN SO MANY PLACES by Lisbon-born Sérgio Roxo who got on a train with his camera. While the images of the landscape keep changing behind the compartment’s windows, the faces of the fellow-travellers change, too. Does a journey always have to have a destination and what are the possibilities of time perception between A and B? A natural encounter of an abandoned space and a curious child is captured in the short film by Jessica Ferreira VIDENDUM ME. While the summerhouse seems to be still at first glance, its water interior is teeming with life; and so is suddenly its surface thanks to the intuitive movement of the small visitor. On the contrary, constant movement and the merging of voices and gestures define the film TWO FOR ONE by Eduardo Caramujo and Vânia Cabral who decided to observe an elementary school and its pupils for a day. You, too, can become school observers and join us on a visit to Escola Superior de Artes e Design de Caldas da Rainha!

Explore the borders of your city and the borders of film perception in the company of Portuguese film students from July 20 to August 2 for free.
