Portuguese Harvest. Watch Films from Doclisboa International Film Festival!

In the wake of Doclisboa IFF, DAFilms.com presents a selection of Portuguese films from November 2 to 15 for free.

The 13th edition of Doclisboa has screened 236 films from 40 countries; 20 films from 17 countries were presented in international competition. The Portuguese competition section has introduced 8 films, including several world premieres and two film debuts. The programme at DAFilms.com follows up the section of Portuguese premieres. (Be)Longing shows us Uz, an isolated hamlet in the northern mountains of Portugal. Four generations live together in a group of around fifty people. When life is rough, solidarity is of the highest order. Everything else is left in God’s hands. They could have emigrated, like so many others, but chose to stay and keep their ancestral way of life, away from the racket of modernity.

Mio Pang Fei is about traditional art and calligraphy meeting western contemporary art. Throughout the cultural revolution, Mio Pang Fei devoted himself to “officially accepted” art — Chinese calligraphy and traditional Chinese art. In Macau, he established his own voice — a meeting of the Chinese tradition and western contemporary techniques he named neo-orientalism.

Songs from the North by director Soon-Mi Yoo tries to understand North Korea, the psychology and popular imagination of the North Korean people and the political ideology of absolute love, which continues to drive the nation towards its uncertain future. It consists of footage from three visits to North Korea, together with songs, spectacle, popular cinema and archival footage.

At the edge of Paris, where the rivers of the Seine and Marne meet, Sheylla shares memories, encounters and feelings from the journeys that have brought her here. In The Golden Triangle we can see that she’s preparing to leave again, but which path should she choose when she can go in any direction?

Wool and Snow is a film about a show and the issues the players face during their collective artistic work. Will we ever be able to leave our cocoons towards a collective movement? How strongly do we believe in those who should lead us? How strongly do they believe in us? We try… We fall… We rise… We try once again… Will we ever make it?

In A Lost Film Eduardo, a middle-aged man, finds images from his childhood. He tries to rebuild the memory of his own past in order to tell the story to his son. In his walk down memory lane he will face death, pain, and separation.

The Indispensable Practice of Vagueness was directed by João Miller Guerra and Filipa Reis and it is based on the school’s archive, on recorded lessons by Manuel Castro Caldas and on home talks.

Illusion, nominated for Doc Alliance Selection Award, is a film about the theatre play based upon texts by Federico García Lorca. The illusion that lives in this film is closely linked to dreams, desires, wills, fantasies and their chances of substantiation.

João Bénard da Costa - Others will love the things I loved is a portrait of João Bénard da Costa, the head of Cinemateca Portuguesa for eighteen years. “I walked down his memory lane and found his love for painting, for churches, for Proust and Musil, for Italy, films, Mozart, and for his friends. But what I really wanted was to depict the contradictory man of flesh and blood, a free man,” says the director Manuel Mozos.
