Midsummer Night’s Dream

Midsummer nights are mild and starry. In those nights, well-ordered sentences make no sense and only poetry can speak. For the last days of the summer holidays, the Doc Alliance Films portal has prepared the poetic film Midsummer Night’s Dream by Czech director Radek Tůma. From August 29, you can plunge into its dreamy atmosphere for free.

“Four nights will quickly dream away the time,” says Hippolyta, the queen of the Amazons, in Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Radek Tůma’s film will quickly dream away a whole film hour. It is not just the film’s title and its playful subtitles with the names of Shakespeare’s characters that allude to one of the most famous comedies of all time. It is primarily the incessant stream of imagination and transformation that is characteristic both for Shakespeare’s dramatic dream and Tůma’s cinematographic dream.
In Midsummer Night’s Dream, several time levels and plot lines merge organically, coming and going; in symbiosis with gentle humour, they set on a journey to an imaginary axis of the world. In an easy, light dancing rhythm, the film revolves around the essential questions of the sense of existence, the sense of the world, as well as the joyful thrills of the human soul. The stream of manifold fragments of images and philosophical accounts is primarily a celebration of everything that is sensual and alive, in a creative contrast to the introductory sequence of the film capturing the Czech presidential election; the short “political grotesque” is a clever illustration of the stiff, inorganic, helpless qualities of those in power.
Midsummer Night’s Dream has been labelled as “a modern lyrical film inspired by romanticism and alchemy” or a “sovereign cinematographic space taking an unconventional perspective of the Czech present”. Nevertheless, it is primarily a journey into the filmmaker’s poetic soul, abundant in charming humour, invention and extraordinary visual sensitivity.
