Although we can still enjoy the long summer evenings in the next week weeks, the programme for October days does not look bad either. 3 out of 7 festivals of the Doc Alliance platform will offer the documentary fans a next stop on their successful festival journey across the best of contemporary world documentary. Take a red pen and note down in capital letters: October 16 to November 2 = Real fall festival ride across film Europe!

The great October Doc Alliance season will be traditionally kicked off by Portugal’s Doclisboa International Film Festival. Just a few days ago, the festival directors Cintía Gil and Augusto M. Seabra revealed the main film events of the programme of this year’s 12th edition. The festival will take place at several localities in Lisbon from October 16 to 26. Portuguese viewers as well as international visitors are invited to take two journeys into the depths of film history. The first one will consist in the retrospective of renowned Dutch director** Johan van der Keuken** introducing his complete works, including the classic films Amsterdam Global Village and the triptych North – South Trilogy. The second journey in time will be provided by the innovatively curated retrospective Neorealism and New Realisms which will bring the works of Italian Neorealism into communication with contemporary films experimenting with various visions of the relation of time and space.

The founding member of Doc Alliance platform, Jihlava International Documentary Film Festival, will pass the festival baton from the South of Europe to the Czech Republic on October 23 to 28. With the 18th edition, the festival will celebrate its coming of age, entering maturity with an original programme motive; the theme of the factory. “To us, the factory is a multi-layered metaphor of today’s world as well as a sign showing how our society has changed in the past 120 years,” says festival director Marek Hovorka. “As a result of the economic crisis and globalization, many factories throughout the world have been closed, while other factory halls are built on greenfield sites, often in their close vicinity. History lessons teaching us about the migration of peoples can add in chapters on the migration of factory buildings and whole industrial branches, as well as the emergence of new fields and construction of new factory halls. Such a perspective can be more telling of the present day than the perception of the world through national borders,” he adds. To see this year’s festival poster, featuring the main motive of the factory, which will also play a significant role in the extensive programme dealing with experimental film, go here.

The last festival to let the impatient viewers inside the dark cinema halls is Germany’s DOK Leipzig International Festival for Documentary and Animated Film. The festival, whose tradition goes back to 1957, will split forces again this year, dividing them between the programme for film professionals and for film viewers. The industry programme, whose concept is described in the exclusive interview with the Leipzig festival team, will provide a creative atmosphere for the meetings of producers of films in the early development stage, cross media projects as well as professional panels and lectures. The film programme will focus on the cinema of former Yugoslavia and present a large retrospective of films produced by DEFA (Deutsche Film-Aktiengesellschaft), the state film studio of the former German Democratic Republic.

The end of the summer calls: Don’t be sad. The festival harvest is on its way!
