Illustrious names of world documentary, special music programme, original theatre performances as well as a writing school are ready for those who will come to Jihlava, Czech Republic between October 23 and 28 to celebrate the coming of age of the founding festival of the Doc Alliance platform.
How a small manufactory became a successful European factory; that is how the story of the festival could be described in the spirit of this year’s factory leitmotif. Originally initiated as a student event, the festival grew up to be an international film event, hosting local documentary fans as well as international professionals from the ranks of directors, distributors and producers. The festival organizes a whole range of industry activities for the latter group. Young talented producers are introduced at the EMERGING PRODUCERS platform. International festival representatives take part in the several-day FESTIVAL IDENTITY programme which develops new trends in the field of programming and organization of film festivals. Professionals as well as the general public can debate at the INSPIRATION FORUM which offers encounters with personalities outside the field of cinema, including civil activists, artists and renowned journalists whose professional stories or life stories have remarkably influenced the society. Moreover, the festival also keeps in mind the education of the future generation of documentary critics, organizing the MEDIA AND DOCUMENTARY programme bringing together selected high school students and professional film journalists.
Those who want more than original film stories on cinema screens can use the abundant opportunities to personally meet original filmmakers. Father of Filipino documentary Kidlat Tahimik, to whom the festival dedicates the main retrospective this year, will participate in the festival events, perhaps even with his bamboo camera. French documentary star Nicolas Philibert, a director with a poetic cinematic vision, will give a film master class to the public. The title pages of the festival programme will also mention the name of renowned Serbian documentarist Želimir Žilnik who will introduce his uncompromising view of engaged social filmmaking, while the other side of the documentary spectrum; the field of experimental film; will be represented by holder of the Golden Leopard from Locarno IFF, Spanish seeker of new audiovisual codes Albert Serra. The gamut of international film guests will further include Austrian experimental classic Peter Tscherkassky and Deborah Stratman, American artist straddling several visual languages at once.
