Love – the theme of this year’s FAMUFEST – is one of the key motives that have appeared in cinema since the beginning of film narration. The Dangerous World of Doctor Doleček, a coproduction documentary of the Czech Television, is a portrait of a ninety-year-old doctor who advocates the ideas of his friend Ratko Mladić, a general accused of war crimes and genocide in Yugoslavia. The film is directed by Kristýna Bartošová who has roots in Bosnia herself. In the documentary, she tries to understand the opinions and stances held by doctor Doleček. The film won the Pavel Koutecký Award and a Special Mention of the Jury in the First Lights section at Jihlava IDFF. You can watch the controversial documentary on Saturday, November 26 at BIO OKO.

Another film you cannot miss is Is Everyone Right? Karel Floss and the Others. The feature-length documentary is a graduation film made by Helena Všetečková after 15 years of studies at the Department of Documentary Film at Prague’s FAMU. The film documents the search for truth, deals with ontological as well as current questions and sums up the most interesting social-cultural opinions of today. The documentary features famous personalities, including Noam Chomsky, Alain Badiou, Slavoj Žižek, Milan Knížák, Václav Klaus and others. Don’t forget to come to BIO OKO on Thursday, November 24.

The master classes presented by the festival along with the films These Daughters of Mine and Documentary on Wheels (Miro Remo) are other events that should appear on your list. These Daughters of Mine by Polish director Kinga Dębska has received several awards, including the Audience Award and the Journalist Award at Gdynia Film Festival. You can watch it on Thursday, November 24 as part of a master class with the director held at BIO OKO. The master class with the director of Documentary on Wheels will be held on Friday, November 25 at BIO OKO as well. The third master class will be held on Saturday, November 26. LoveTrue, the winner of the Best Documentary Film award at KVIFF 2016, will be discussed by its producer Christopher Leggett who will come straight from sunny LA. A big attraction among the side events is the special screening of the animated French film Fantastic Planet with a live soundtrack. The film was made in Czechoslovak coproduction at Prague’s Jiří Trnka Studio in 1973. It was directed by René Laloux and written by Surrealist-inspired visual artist and writer Roland Topor. In the same year, the allegoric sci-fi Fantastic Planet won the Audience Award at Cannes. The live soundtrack will be taken care of by Aid Kid, who has teamed up with electronic producer Tomáš Havlen, violoncellist Terezie Kovalová and pianist Jiří Libanský for the project. The screening will be held on Saturday, November 26 at Studio Hrdinů.
