The South Caucasus region boasts a unique film culture, whose films can often be seen at international film festivals worldwide. CinéDOC Tbilisi offers one of the first opportunities to learn more about this work. Although this year’s 8th annual documentary film festival cannot take place in April as originally planned, we’ve worked closely with the festival’s programmers to bring you the best in contemporary Georgian, Armenian and Azerbaijani film.
You can get a feel for the atmosphere of the Georgian capital in the medium-length, personalised film, My Piece of the Earth. The director will guide you through both present and long-forgotten places of Tbilisi. Two short Armenian films will show you the different nature of the locals. Whereas in Adaptation we witness portraits of people living in the capital city of Yerevan, the director of the film Wound takes us to the city of Gyumri, which was struck hard by a devastating earthquake in 1988. This natural disaster has left an everlasting impact on the local people still to this day. Take a load off your shoulders and be sure to catch Jester’s Calendar, a film about the unlikely friendship between a clown and your friendly neighbourhood spiderman. The film’s two main protagonists bring happiness and laughter to children living in remote villages.
All films included in this special program are available for free streaming from 13 to 19 April. (In Georgia from 13 April to 3 May.)
