Taiwanese Avant-Garde

A new curated selection featuring experimental Taiwanese films from the 1960s is waiting for you to push play. Be among the first to view these hidden avant-garde gems from Taiwan, which only until fairly recently were just collecting dust in a vault somewhere.

This unique opportunity promises to deliver daring cinematic works that refused to conform to the societal norms of the time and were created during a period where a repressive political regime was in power. Taiwan in the 1960s was a nation marked by a repressive political climate and a heavily restricted flow of information. Nevertheless, young Taiwanese artists were eager to align themselves with the innovations of their counterparts in the West. They formed a concept of what the “avant-garde” could look like and carried out their own experiments in film and theatre.

Half a century later, the Taiwan International Documentary Film Festival team went to great lengths to find and compile a filmography of 34 key avant-garde titles. In May 2018, the festival presented this very special series and openly screened a few of these titles for the public for the very first time since they were made several decades ago.

Now you have the exclusive chance to stream 16 short films from this special program, which has given these works a new lease of life. Rediscover the magic of these astonishing films, which offer a whole new perspective on 1960s Taiwan. As you’ll likely gather from watching each individual short, this era was undoubtedly a time full of modernist, avant-garde ideas and experimentation waiting to be seen and heard.

Step foot into uncharted territory and let your imagination run wild!
