Art Must Be Beautiful (Czech selection)

An immersive watercolour of the life of artist Jan Jedlička. The Czech painter, filmmaker and photographer emigrated to Switzerland in 1968 before making his second home in the desolate landscape of the Tuscan lowlands of Maremma.

Everybody knows his drawings and his stylized silhouettes, yet few people know his name. The most successful pop/graffiti artist of the 80s is still all around us – in hospitals, churches, casinos, gardens, walls, galleries, posters, tee-shirts – and in our memories.

Art is merely a label of no relevance according to the artist Christian Eisenberger. At the age of 40 he has created over 45,000 works. He deposited thousands of them on streets and squares, where anyone could gather them up. He defies galleries, art fairs and museums with his unrestrained production. His art runs rampant, eluding all control.

She is the other gaze is a collaboration with female visual artists of an older generation who were part of the Viennese art scene in the 1970s and were engaged in the women’s movement.

Filmmaker Angela Christlieb embarks on a search for the vanished art terrorist group Gelitin. The artist and gallerist Salvatore Viviano is at her side. Interviews with internationally renowned names of the international art scene and archive material lead to a journey into a world full of wonders, scandals and body parts.

Today, analogue video is attractive primarily thanks to the distinctive aesthetic quality of its pixelated image and raster errors. But for Czech artists who first explored the possibilities offered by video art in the late 1980s, this medium represented a path towards freedom.

In Rembrandt, Haanstra shows that it is possible to make a fascinating film, only with images from paintings.
