In The Three Veterans, a fairytale released in 1983, Oldřich Lipský tells the story of three soldiers, discharged with honours, relearning to appreciate the magical gift of life. A chance of redemption for three virtually useless men comes when elves give them three magical items: a hat, a purse and a harp. As they quickly make use of the items in selfish ways, the story takes every unexpected turn imaginable and manages to make much use of situational and verbal comedy, yet also teaches a strong moral lesson.
