He has been called a genius amateur, a pioneer, a lone wolf, an alpine dervish: Christian Schocher is probably the most legendary, but also the least known of all Swiss filmmakers. As the son of a film pioneer, he fell under the spell of the silver screen at a very young age. For 45 years, he ran the Cinéma Rex in the Swiss mountain village of Pontresina, where he sat behind the projector every evening. In addition, Christian Schocher made his own films, under adventurous conditions and with minimal means, without a script or dialogue, simply out of the desire and joy of cinema. His legendary feature film, Travelling Warrior (1981), the more than three-hour odyssey of a cosmetics salesman through Switzerland, revolutionized Swiss cinema and became an internationally acclaimed masterpiece.
