Taiwan International Documentary Festival (TIDF) is a biennial. Following the 13th edition held in May, 2022, 2023 is the year for the tour programme! From January on, the 2023 TIDF on Tour has embarked upon the journey to different cities and venues around Taiwan with its handpicked programmes.
For international audiences, TIDF proudly presents 7 acclaimed award-winning titles from the latest festival edition featured in three major (Asian Vision, International, and Taiwan! ) competition sections and also the TIDF Visionary Award.
With a unique fashion of storytelling, The Burrows radiates the magic of documentaries, connecting a seemingly quiet local life in China with a larger situation of the world. Silence in the Dust asks tough questions about the role of documentaries and documentary filmmakers in the most tragic and private moment of a Chinese pneumoconiosis patient’s life.
Breaking away from traditional ideology, Taste of Wild Tomato traces through the micro narratives with memories of World War II and the Chinese Civil War to re-examinesTaiwan’s unique historical trajectory from the wretched colonial days to its democratisation. Weiyena - The Long March Home encapsulates China’s rise and fall through the director’s family story with a touch of warmth as well as the critical force in posing questions regarding universal values.
Three other complexly layered works demonstrate the creative use of original formal qualities: Danse Macabre utilises multiple audiovisual materials to reconstruct the turbulent history of Thailand. K’s Room – The Creation and Destruction calls attention to the mental imprisonment during Taiwan’s Martial Law period under the guise of an English lesson whereas The Making of Crime Scenes draws on one of Taiwan’s most prominent murder cases during its martial law period by entangling a variety of documentation and reconstruction techniques with the protagonist’s multifaceted history.
All the films are available for free from February 20 - March 5, 2023.
