Each year, early summer on the French Riviera is dedicated to FIDMarseille. From July 9 to 15, the renowned French documentary film festival will hold its 30th anniversary edition. The festival offers a diverse mix of documentaries experimenting with form as well as with the very documentary genre. Before this year’s juries reveal the new winners, watch the best films from the past edition.
The Grand Prix went to Spanish director Dora García for her nontraditional portrait of Argentine thinker Oscar Masotta entitled Segunda Vez. Masotta became a leading theorist of the avant-garde movement in Argentina from the 1950s to the 1970s which was linked to the easing of the dictatorial regime of Juan Domingo Perón. The documentary captures the political events of the times, combining them with art performances in the spirit of Argentine avant-garde. Behind Our Eyes by debuting director Anton Bialas portrays three protagonists living a nontraditional life, each in a different way. We follow the routines of a homeless street artist, a lonesome painter and a blind young man living in the middle of the woods. Besides scoring with the professional jury, the film also received the Audience Award and the High School Award.
