DOK Leipzig: Who Owns the Truth?

While the word truth has become an integral part of today’s discourse, hardly anyone knows what it means. Truth is also the cornerstone of documentary film. Watch four exceptional films screened at DOK Leipzig to see how documentary filmmakers seek the truth.

Swiss director Milo Rau set out to the Democratic Republic of Congo which has been buffeted by a chaotic civil war for years. In one place, the interests of Congo’s armed forces, rebel fighters, militant groups and supranational organizations clash. The director decided to invite representatives of all parties concerned and hold a tribunal captured in The Congo Tribunal. In a country which has not seen such space for reflection until now, politicians, businessmen, perpetrators and victims meet in a single place. The fascinating project is rightfully called the most ambitious art project of today.

What are the motivations of people who decided to enter an extremist or militant organization? Director Karen Winther looked for answers in her film Exit, conducting interviews with top representatives of extremist movements from all corners of the world. The selection further includes the documentary The Specialist, Portrait of a Modern Criminal capturing the post-war trial with Adolf Eichmann, and the portrait of a young member of an elite unit of the Israeli army in Z32 directed by Avi Mograbi.

The Festival Focus is linked to the Who Owns the Truth? symposium held within DOK Leipzig 2019.
