Discover the images, sounds, and tastes of Central and Eastern Europe. Trieste Film Festival will also be presenting fresh, emerging talents and fearless creators for this year's online festivities. The same goes for our special film programme we have in store for you, which we’ve compiled in close cooperation with the festival's programmers. Get ready for a series of documentary films that are sure to ensnare your senses while offering a visually stunning feast for the eyes.
Although the main section of this festival programme is comprised of fiction films, the documentary sections are definitely worthy of your attention. Through the documentary medium, the festival's programmers have managed to piece together a holistic view of the countries that were historically separated from Western Europe by the Iron Curtain. Last year's competing film Heimat is a Space in Time by German filmmaker and playwright Thomas Heise offers a unique view of East Germany. In his nearly four-hour-long film essay, he composes a mosaic of family stories that were adversely affected by the events of World War II and the life that followed under communist rule. Following the example of Gerhard Gundermann, who is perhaps best known as the "miner Bob Dylan," director Grit Lemke centres on the story of an individual who used music to navigate his way through life in East Germany. In the movie Coal-Country Song. Gundermann, you'll become acquainted with his lyrics and songs, which later became the “soundtrack” to the lives of East Germans.
This selection of significant films from last year's festival is complemented by the latest films from this year's programme, which are mainly available to Italian audiences. We will be proudly presenting this curated programme from 25 January until 7 February.
