It's that time of the year: the Doc Alliance Award ceremony at the Cannes Film Festival. The films selected by the 7 Doc Alliance festivals are the filmmakers' first or second films, a gesture of support for artists just starting out in the world of documentary cinema. The two winners – one feature-length and one short film – are subsequently chosen from these nominated films by a jury comprising prominent European journalists and filmmakers.
We are bringing you the selection of this year's nominated films in a limited online preview on DAFilms. You will also be able to see many of the nominated films on the big screen at the Doc Alliance festivals that will take place in the coming months.
As an extra, you can also rediscover a number of the Doc Alliance Award winners from the past five years, which have gone on to enduring success in the world of documentary, including last year's feature winner, the heartbreaking family portrait The Blunder of Love by Rocco di Mento. Other winning Doc Alliance Award films featured here include the mystical Portuguese epic Ghosts: Long Way Home, the dreamlike Syrian essay film Taste of Cement, the singular feminist portrait of Kurdish warriors Gulîstan, Land of Roses, and Srbenka, a Croatian portrait of war crimes and the scars they leave on their survivors that is - tragically - more pertinent than ever.
