Madame X - An Ulrike Ottinger Retrospective

Virtually impossible to classify, the cinema of Ulrike Ottinger is as rich as it is strange: it rather moves through a maze of cinematic forms and styles.

Ottinger's early films, principally the so-called Berlin Trilogy included in our program, are extravagant, provocative queer films set in a grey Cold War Berlin, gleefully and frequently exploding the all boundaries of taste, of high- and low-art, and of respectable, classical forms of literary adaptation.

Later in her career, Ottinger would travel the world with greater rapidity, recording what she found with an uncommon respect and patience for the people she encountered. In these films, hers is a contemplative gaze that deeply rewards the viewer with sights and sounds that surpass even the imaginative spectacles of her early fantasy films.

Take a trip to planet Ottinger, where you will encounter all the faces and all the variations of this great artist.
