The summer is nowhere near over! This year, too, DAFilms presents a selection of films by young filmmakers from the Department of Documentary Film at Prague’s FAMU. What are the areas of interest of the up-and-coming generation of documentary filmmakers?
One of the recurrent themes is war and its (non)presence in our lives. In her documentary Teaching War, director Adéla Komrzý follows the attempts to reintroduce civil defence education, the fear of an enemy and an almost grotesque desire for militarism and order. In her film Arms Ready, Barbora Chalupová looks into why have or not have a gun. How easy is it to get it illegally? Zdeněk Chaloupka, on the other hand, sets out abroad and heads to the Ukraine. His film Show Me the War follows the story of a fixer, a local guide for journalists.
However, FAMU students do not address war themes only; their films often have a very personal level as well. For instance, in Epidemic of Freedom, Tereza Reichová researches all available information on vaccination to be able to make the right decision about the vaccination of her newborn daughter Žofie. The last film included in our selection is the acclaimed experimental documentary Traces, Fragments, Roots following the transformation of nature on 16 mm film.
